Spieth completes three-peat at HP Byron Nelson Junior
Nolen & Scheffler finish four shots back

DALLAS, Texas (June 30, 2010) - It's not every day that multiple media outlets send camera crews to cover a junior golf tournament. But that's what you get when you combine one of golf's true legends and the No. 1 junior golfer in the world.
Jordan Spieth with Mrs. Peggy Nelson

Eleven years ago the Texas Golf Association and Northern Texas PGA asked for, and received permission, to hold a junior golf tournament in honor of Byron Nelson. Now conducted by the Legends Junior Tour, the HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship is widely considered one of the strongest invitational fields in the region. This year's field consisted of 78 of the top boys from Texas and Mexico. The par-71 Lakewood CC played 6,647 yards.

Much like last year, Jordan Spieth entered this year's HP Byron Nelson Junior after four grueling days at the Texas Amateur Championship. But unlike last year, when he cruised to an 11-shot victory, Spieth was challenged from the outset. After opening with a 3-under par-68, which gave him a share of the lead, Spieth failed to pull away in the second round. A 1-under par-70 gave him only a one-stroke lead entering today's final round.

"I really didn't have a fear of losing but I knew Stratton [Nolen] would be gunning for me," said Spieth.

A bogey on No. 1, coupled with Nolen's birdie on No. 2, left Spieth out of the lead for the first time in the tournament. Nolen's spot at the top of the leaderboard was shortlived, however, as he would bogey his next two holes. The real turning point, in Spieth's eyes, would come two holes later as he made his first birdie of the day while Nolen made bogey.

Said Spieth, "It was early but I thought that was the biggest hole [No. 6]. He made bogey and I made birdie and I thought that was big."

Spieth, 16, would never relinquish his lead despite making bogey on Nos. 9 and 11. But Scott Scheffler of Dallas did make things interesting with consecutive birdies on Nos. 13 and 14, which pulled him within one shot of the lead. Scheffler would finish with a bogey on No. 18 to finish four shots back at even-par.

Despite his up-and-down round, Nolen finished in a tie with Scheffler at even-par. The top-5 was rounded out by co-first round leader, Sam Fidone of Lufkin, and Hallsville's Nathan Weant.

The top-10 players received a framed flag with their finishing position embroidered on it. They, along with players who finished 11-15, also receive an exemption into next year's HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship.

For Spieth, it was the end of a busy month in which he played in two AJGA events, another PGA Tour event and the aforementioned Texas Amateur. Tomorrow he leaves for a much deserved vacation in Mexico.

"I can't wait. I'm going to sleep a lot and then get ready for the U.S. Junior," said Spieth.

As for next year, Spieth didn't rule it out. "We'll see what happens. I love the event so you never know," he said.

Not only were several news outlets in attendance but so were several college coaches. Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Baylor were among the dozen coaches on-hand to scout some of junior golf's top talent.

In addition to the college coaches, the Legends Junior Tour would also like to thank the staff of Lakewood CC, the volunteers, Rules Officials and HP for their help and support.
